Analysis of deformation features in Slochteren sandstone in core K06-D-01
The mineralogy of fractures in sandstone reservoirs may play an important role, as they can behave as barriers or conduits to fluid flow and because they might affect the reservoir geomechanical strength. As part of a TNO research project, the Slochteren sandstone as drilled in the K06-04 core (K-block, Dutch offshore sector of the North Sea) was examined with particular focus on a set of structural elements, present between 3844 and 3853 m along-hole depth. These include faults, mineralized fractures and deformation bands. Their orientation, cross-cutting relationships and petrographic and mineralogical composition were determined and compared to the host rock. The study paid attention to the use and comparison of results from multiple techniques including optical light and scanning electron microscopy (descriptive and quantitative) and short wavelength infrared hyperspectral analysis. This allowed providing a comprehensive insight into the history of deformation and associated mineralogical changes. Each technique offers distinct advantages and limitations, facilitating a coherent interpretation of the mineralogical characteristics and diagenetic history of the Slochteren sandstone at this location.
