Proceedings in salt cavern uses and abandonment: Bridging the technical and social perspectives

Samenvatting / Begeleidende tekst

Five years have passed since the successful ‘cavern abandonment workshop’ in 2019. Since then, several key research programs and workshops/conferences have been initiated (and mostly completed), including two projects in the Knowledge program for Effects of Mining (KEM-17 and KEM-28), the Cavern Closure Consortium (CCC) work for Nobian, several SMRI research projects, and SaltMech X (2022 in Utrecht). These have yielded new insights into the (short and long-term) behaviour of salt caverns and abandonment strategies.

This workshop was organized to give an update on the developments of the past five years from the perspective of operators, knowledge institutes and policy makers. This workshop was unique because it covers how new scientific insight can be translated to policy and practice. The first day focused on the technical and scientific progress and the second day on developments and changes foreseen in the policy and regulatory domains. We thank our co-hosts and speakers for supplying great presentations and the audience for participating in the panel discussions.

Below you can find the program of the workshop and the folders where you can find the presentation slides of each session within the downloadable zip file. Within the zip file you can also find the synthesis of the workshop in Dutch.
